Questions before you book
Direct answers to what galleries, sale-room buyers, designers and collectors ask before booking an art courier. If your question is not here, call or message us.
Booking and timing
How quickly can you collect?
We have drivers all over the UK, so we can meet urgent requirements at any time of day or night. Tell us how soon it needs collecting and we will confirm the time when you book. If it is not urgent, choose the day and time that suit both addresses. Call or message 07440 097101 to start.
Are you open at night and at weekends?
Yes. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and run deliveries around the clock across the UK. Evening get-outs, early starts before an opening and weekend jobs are booked the same way as any other.
Can you collect from several galleries or addresses in one trip?
It depends on the pieces, the timing and the access at each stop. List every address and what goes where, and we will say whether it works best as one job or more.
How far in advance should I book?
As early as you can, and earlier still for Europe: the export and import paperwork has to be in place before collection, and some works need a UK export licence, which takes time to arrange. If the date is fixed by a sale, a fair or an opening, tell us when you first get in touch.
What if the collection date changes?
Tell us as soon as you know, and we agree a new date with you and the receiver. For a Europe job, the customs paperwork may need updating for the new date, so earlier notice helps.
What we move, and who for
Where are you based, and where do you go?
We are based in London and have driven routes all over the UK, such as Manchester to Birmingham and London to Glasgow, with drivers across the country. A job does not have to start or end in London. We also deliver to and from Europe: see routes to Europe.
Do you take work from galleries and other businesses?
Yes. Galleries, dealers, art advisers, auction houses, artists, framers, interior designers, furniture retailers and event planners can book us the same way as a private collector. Museums and public collections are welcome to send a request with their loan or transport conditions.
Do you only move art?
No. Art and antiques are our specialism, but we also move furniture for retailers and interior designers, display pieces and props for event planners, and other valuable or awkward items. With vans of different sizes, large jobs and small ones are both welcome. See man and van.
Will my piece share a van with other deliveries?
Not on a dedicated job. The van carries your consignment only, straight from collection to delivery, with no other pickups or drop-offs and no depot on the way.
Do you offer a man and van?
Yes. We have several drivers and vans of different sizes, and bigger items go with two people. Tell us about stairs, lifts and parking at both ends when you book, and anything heavy or awkward. See man and van for antiques and furniture.
How many people come on a job?
As many as the job needs. Large paintings and bigger items go with two people, and we can send two on any job that requires it. Give us the size and the access at each end, and we plan it before the day. Further help with lifting and carrying is available at an extra cost.
Insurance, updates and care
Do I need to wrap my piece?
Usually, yes: pieces are normally wrapped by you before collection. If you would like us to wrap them, we can, at an extra cost. Mention it when you ask for a quote and it will be included in the price.
Is my piece insured while you carry it?
Yes, we are fully insured. Tell us the value of each piece when you ask for a quote. How we protect your work explains how condition is checked at each end.
Will I know where my piece is during the job?
Yes. You get a text message at each stage, from collection to delivery. You can also reach us by phone or WhatsApp at any hour. The receiver is told when to expect us, and the piece is checked with them at delivery.
How should I prepare a painting or object before collection?
Photograph it, front and back, including any damage, then wrap it so it is ready to load, or ask us to wrap it at an extra cost. Tell us what protection is on it, such as a travel frame or a box. Take it off the wall only if it is easy and safe to do so. The preparation guide goes into more detail.
What happens on the day of collection?
We arrive at the agreed time, check each piece against your description with you, wrap it if you have asked us to, and load it so that it cannot shift. You can photograph the piece at handover. Someone needs to be there to hand it over; name them in the notes if it will not be you.
Do I need to be there at collection and delivery?
Not personally, but someone does: a person to hand the piece over, and a person to receive it. Give us their names and phone numbers when you book.
Sale rooms, venues and loans
Can you collect a piece I bought at auction?
Yes. Sale rooms usually have their own release process: cleared payment, a release note, sometimes a booked slot or a named contact. Send us those details with your request and we work to them, then deliver to the address you give. See auction collections.
Can you work to a loading-bay slot or a venue timetable?
Yes. Send the booked slot, the venue’s delivery rules and a contact on site, and we plan the collection or delivery around them. For a fair or exhibition, the collection at the close is booked at the same time as the delivery for the install.
Can you follow the transport conditions in a loan agreement?
It depends on the conditions. Send them with the request, and before you book we say which we can meet and which we cannot. If they ask for two people, we can send two.
Can you move work for an exhibition or fair and bring it back?
Yes. Tell us the dates and where it is going, and we plan the return at the same time as the outward journey. Work that goes out and comes back unsold can often travel under temporary paperwork, such as an ATA Carnet or temporary admission, instead of a full export and re-import. See art fairs and exhibitions.
Europe and customs
Can you take works to or from Europe?
Yes. Work moves both ways between the UK and Europe. Each job needs customs paperwork, which we take care of, and some art needs an export licence. See routes to Europe for how each crossing is planned.
My piece contains ivory or tortoiseshell. Does that matter?
Yes. Tick the protected-materials box on the quote form, or tell us when you call. Such items can need exemptions or CITES permits to sell or to move across borders, so it is settled before anything else.
Getting a quote
How do I describe a work for a quote?
Say what it is (a framed painting, a canvas, a sculpture, a piece of furniture), how many pieces there are, and the height, width and depth of each in centimetres, including any frame. Add the approximate weight if it is heavy, and whether it is glazed. A photograph from the front and one from the side tell us more than a paragraph.
What else do you need to know?
Where it is now and where it is going (a town or postcode is enough to start), when you need it moved or whether you are flexible, and the access at either end: stairs, lifts, parking, a goods entrance, a porter or a booked slot. For Europe, tell us what you know about customs, for example whether you have an EORI number or an agent.
How do I get a quote?
Message or call 07440 097101, or email contact@hrlogistic.co.uk, with a photo of the piece, the two addresses and the date. If you would rather fill in a form, the quote form asks for everything we need.
What affects the price?
Distance, the size and number of pieces, access at each end, any wrapping or extra help you need, timing, and for Europe, the paperwork. The pricing guide explains each one.
Ready to book?
Send a photo and the two addresses, at any hour, and we will come back with a quote. Or get a quote online.
